In and Around Ramsgate “Ramsgate’s picturesque seafront is a happy mix of working port and modern, trendy café culture” Sunday Times Oct 1st 2006 Glendevon Guest House offers a quiet and convenient location. It is situated 100 metres back from East Cliff just behind the large Granville building and cinema (which shows all the up-to-date movies) and is only a 10-minute walk to Ramsgate’s town and harbour. It is a 5-minute walk to Ramsgate’s Seaside Award popular sandy beach, which has lifeguards, donkey rides and many other attractions for all ages including designated jet-ski area adjacent to the main beach. If you walk in the other direction along the promenade and through King George VI Park (check out the bright green parakeets that frequent the children’s playing ground to the north of the park if you get a chance) following the main path, you will come out at Dumpton Gap cliffs (15-minute walk) and you can continue to walk along the promenade until you get to Broadstairs (walking time approximately 20-25 minutes – if you stop for an ice-cream!). Glendevon guesthouse is situated on the Viking Coastal Trail for walkers and cyclists, which you can find out more about from www.vikingcoastaltrail.co.uk. Guests are welcome to bring their bicycles where we have a garage for locked storage (owners leave bicycles at own risk). Other Local Attractions Ramsgate seaside resort town is becoming more up and coming and an excellent option for people deciding to opt for a holiday at home rather than deepening their ‘carbon footprint’ by flying abroad. With the advent of the high-speed rail link, which is due for completion in 2009 enabling more easy access from London (journey time will be 55 minutes), many are choosing Ramsgate as their preferred holiday home location for weekends and summer months (The Sunday Times, Oct 1st 2006). Coffee bars, trendy restaurants and lively bars are cropping up all over the place and the town has many of the High Street options to choose from along with some of Ramsgate’s own stores. The Royal Harbour, which is the only one in the country that has been granted Royal status, (by King George IV after being so gratified by the reception he was given by the Ramsgate people in 1820) also has a casino (opposite the base of the working Edwardian lift at East Cliff) and a great fish and chip shop (Pete’s Fish Factory) along with a selection of eateries and bars to sit outside and enjoy the atmosphere! The new Westwood Cross shopping centre is 3 miles away with a further choice of large shopping stores. To find out more about Ramsgate visit the local tourist website www.tourism.thanet.gov.uk Sandwich is a 15-minute drive (9 hole golf course, Stone Lees is en route) and is a pretty ‘cinque port’ to visit with Tudor architecture and nature reserve, which is popular with bird watchers (Pegwell Bay). Broadstairs is a 5-minute drive. Dickens week is celebrated in true Dickensian style in June and the Folk festival is held in August. Joss Bay and Botany Bay (10-minute drive) are beautiful sandy beaches offering a more quiet option to the lively Viking Bay (20-minute walk), which is considered a more fun packed option for kids. Wingham Wildlife Park is a 20-minute drive. Howletts Zoo is a 30-minute drive. Canterbury city is a 30-minute drive.
