February 2018 already!

How are we already in February???  A month has already gone of the New Year! So a belated happy New Year to you all and look forward to seeing many of you throughout 2018.

Last year was a bumper year for us where we saw our busiest summer season yet and we are now in our twelfth year so that’s pretty amazing.  The UK coastal holiday is back on the radar and you don’t have to just take my word for it, there is plenty of research to back up our experience.  People of all ages and their families are reacquainting themselves with the traditional seaside holiday and are finding this little corner of England offers them lots of choices to ensure everyone comes away with magical memories of their holiday. Judging by the amount of return visitors we welcome back, Ramsgate and the Isle of Thanet, don’t disappoint.

If walking and cycling are your thing, we have fabulous unique trails allowing you to take in the stunning chalkcliffed coastline and amazing architecture in fact, one of our trails has just made it into the top 100 trails in ITV’s Britain’s Favourite Walks! On one of the steering groups I belong to, we thought the walk from Ramsgate to Margate, which is just under 8 miles, offered a unique experience with plenty of pitstops and breathtaking scenery to enjoy along the way so we set about creating a map and downloadable trail so that more people could experience the delights on our doorstep.  Now the walk has featured in a national TV programme which Charlie and I helped with when it was filmed with Julia Bradbury back in November.   The photos are a couple I took whilst doing the walk last week with Rosie dog getting very bored!

There are plenty of other activities on offer too, from kayaking to kitesurfing and seal watching to sand castle building! We also have local golf courses, tennis, pickleball and guided tours ranging from the wonderful costumed walks that take place in the summer to birdwatching tours that take in the seasonal wildlife that visit us periodically throughout the year.  This month, our harbour residents include kingfishers that make the marina their home during the winter.  They are so delightful that they made an appearance on BBC2 on the very last Winterwatch programme (50 minutes in).

If it happens to be raining when you visit, don’t worry as there are loads of indoor activities for you to enjoy including a new Escape Room and Laser Quest arena for those who like a bit of adrenalin or the new visitor centre at St Augustine’s which is open every day, for the more sedate!

On April 1st, we are having an Easter Parade with an Alice in Wonderland theme which will take place in the morning followed by the first of the outdoor hand made markets and a Mad Hatters Tea Party of course!  The children of Ramsgate are already getting stuck in to making costumes,  (mad) hats, cards and rabbit heads in readiness for the parade so as long as April doesn’t do its thing and rain, it should be a great start to the high season!  The other exciting new offering from April will be the Spitfire Simulator at the Hurricane and Spitfire museum where you can get a taste of what it would have been like to fly one of these iconic planes.  If that’s something you are interested in, book early as this is proving to be a ‘must do’ for locals and visitors alike.  They are also offering gift vouchers which I reckon will be a great pressie for those ‘what on earth am I going to get them this year’ people! Price for a 30 minute experience is £30.

Whatever you decide to do when you come to Ramsgate, the one thing I can guarantee you will get is a warm welcome from us and friendly service throughout your visit!
